Chetan comes to live with them, worried a When I picked up this book with it's beautiful cover, the word 'love' in the title and its lush Caribbean island setting, I have to admit I thought I was settling in for a light, pleasant read.
Chetan comes to live with them, worried about the various twists and blows life deals to all three. This is the first novel I've read by a Trinidadian author and I loved how Persaud created such a rich world for her characters.
The food, the language and the setting are all so beautifully drawn that, even though I've never been to Trinidad, I felt like I was there.
I especially loved how quickly the story travels through time, skilfully covering quite a long time span in a relatively short number of pages. Though I loved Betty and Mr, Chetan and wasn't as gripped by Solo's story, I still am really glad I read this novel and recommend it to anyone with an interest in international fiction.
Apr 20, Stephanie Burton rated it really liked it. See more of my book reviews on my blog, Literary Flits Love After Love is an insightful domestic drama set mostly on the island of Trinidad, a beautiful place, but one blighted by poverty, violence and intolerance.
At the centre of this novel are Betty and her pre-teen son, Solo, who take in Mr Chetan as their lodger. These three very different characters take it in turns, chapter by chapter, to narrate the story of how their lives come together and then diverge.
Their relationship felt authentic See more of my book reviews on my blog, Literary Flits Love After Love is an insightful domestic drama set mostly on the island of Trinidad, a beautiful place, but one blighted by poverty, violence and intolerance.
Their relationship felt authentic and it's not taking the usual path for a fictional novel made Love After Love particularly memorable for me.
I loved how Ingrid Persaud gave every character a distinctive voice even down to briefly-met cameo appearances. I could always quickly tell which of our protagonists was speaking through their use of language and the Trini dialect throughout is wonderful.
It was easy to understand, and I appreciated the extra depth provided by local idioms and phrasings.
Trinidad society is a mix of varied cultural elements which is well portrayed. The cuisine especially takes influences seemingly from all over the world and food is an important part of the story.
Both Betty and Mr Chetan show love through cookery and I was intrigued by other similarities between them too. One of Mr Chetan's less-healthy relationships comes close to mirroring Betty's marriage so we saw how such destructive behaviour isn't dictated solely by gender.
I'm struggling to write everything I want to say in this review because I keep veering too close to giving away plotlines that I appreciated not having know before I started to read!
Enough to say, I think, that Love After Love would be a good choice for fans of tropical fiction, and of stories about atypical family relationships.
Oh, and this is definitely a Snacks On Standby read! A remarkable story with so many heartbreaking moments. I finished this book a couple of days ago.
A new experience I had because this book was written in Carribean Literature and it's really unique.
I was having a hard time to understand the language at first, but pages after pages I started to getting used of it. Betty Ramdin was married to an abusive husband, Sunil.
She tried her best to protect her son, Solo who means everything to her. Betty is left a widow after Sunil died. Betty started to g A remarkable story with so many heartbreaking moments.
Betty started to get along with Mr. Chetan is her work colleague who she took as their lodger. Chetan started to develop a bond with Betty and Solo.
Chetan took the role for Solo as a father. However, there's a secret spilled and made Solo leaves Trinidad and stayed with his Uncle Hari.
The main characters felt real to me. They have diferrent personalites. The bond between Betty and Mr. Chetan is special. My sympathy is with Solo.
He's lonely and everyday he's struggling living in New York City. Will they finally get back to live together again? The plot was good.
I've become invested in the story especially with the characters. I really enjoyed reading the first half of book. The plot was really strong.
The ending of the book will make you shed a tear. Great writing! Thank you Times Reads for sending me this book in return for an honest review.
What contributed to creating this experience is the authenticity of the book - the social and cultural realities of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the language and dialect.
The characters felt so real that when their hearts broke, mine also broke! Much deserved praise for this fantastic novel from Ingrid Persaud publishing April Beautiful and affecting with gorgeous characters and if you like super descriptions of food in books this is for you!
Jun 18, Thebooktrail rated it it was amazing Shelves: books-set-in-the-carribbean. Visit the locations in the book An interesting book on many levels as that title is both confusing and very very clear at the same time.
This is not a book about love in the romantic sense but is one about love, hate, friendship and everything in between. A woman in Trinidad lives with her husband and son.
She is abused in the marriage and so often finds herself having to cover things up and make things nice for her son to hide the truth from him.
When her husband dies, she starts getting out more Visit the locations in the book An interesting book on many levels as that title is both confusing and very very clear at the same time.
When her husband dies, she starts getting out more and meets a certain Mr Chetan who will change her life, in ways neither of them expected.
This is a character based novel and the language of the novel creates the essence of a visit to Trinidad. The nuances of the dialect, the culture of not being able to leave a marriage, fear of being judged also come through loud and clear.
Both Betty and Mr Chetan are very complex and interesting characters. They are affected by birth, life experiences and also caught up in the decisions that other people make.
We all are to some extent, but this one is unique in the way that two such very different characters seem to share more than they realise.
The neighbours of the piece each have their story to tell, their side of the truth and of the reality of life on the island.
This is an island with a dark past yet its people are warm, funny, and full of sunshine when around them, only darkness exists. When the story moves to New York, none of the Trinidadian flavour is lost.
The son finds out secrets and flees to the big city. Both Mr. Chetan and Betty have shameful secrets, criminal even.
There are different rules it would seem in Trinidad about love and being who you are and this will provide interesting topics for book clubs!
Dark subjects seen through warm and friendly eyes. This novel moved me, wowed me and made me sad in equal measure. I loved this book, but I am Trinidadian and can easily understand this book.
Let me explain. The writing was captivating and kept me so interested that I licked it up in a day. In fact, the exaggeration of the vernacular is probably what made me downgrade this from a 5 to a 4 since I just think it perpetuates a stereotype that Caribbean people cant speak English well, when in reality we are pretty well spoken people in general with some of the best literacy rates in the world.
Really happy that it was our book club book of the month. The characters were superbly developed, the atmosphere was authentic and the situations, believable.
A beautiful tale about an unconventional Indo-Trini family. An absolute pleasure to read. I will definitely re-read this one. Sep 14, Tea And Chill rated it liked it.
This would have been such a brilliant book if it wasn't for part 3. The writing style is amazing and listening to the audiobook felt like gossiping with friends and even though there were a lot of heavy topics brought out it didn't feel too hard to manage.
The writing style is also obviously meant for a Trinidadian audience with words and phrases unique to their language which is really nice when Caribbean authors write in their own language.
But part three really ruined the brilliance of this b This would have been such a brilliant book if it wasn't for part 3.
But part three really ruined the brilliance of this book by using a harmful and unnecessary trope Edit : Mi vex.
It was fantastic until it became pedestrian and predictable. Shelves: read-women , audiobook , americas-not-usa , women-around-the-world-challenge.
My first read from Trinidad and I was instantly transported. Ingrid Persaud touches many important issues - domestic violence, homophobia, self harm, alcoholism - in such a tender way.
The deeper issues are mixed in with plenty of light-heartedness and humour making it very human as a whole.
The characters are real and I found their honesty to be refreshing and relatable; I feel like they will stay with me for a long time.
Also, a fantastic audio narration by the author. In Love After Love, Trinidadian author Ingrid Persaud challenges the reader's definitions of love and family by presenting Indo-Caribbean characters growing in intimacy and need over several years.
The twists and turns of this story broaches generational tendencies, LGBTQ awareness, mental health and immigration and the narrative thrills with Caribbean representation.

From the vivid descriptions of flowers, food and celebrations to the step-by-step directions for how to season and cook local delicacies to the idiomatic expressions that pepper the characters' dialogue, to the rituals and customs uniquely practiced by Caribbean people of Indian descent, each page is an experience of Trinidad.
But while the narrative includes quite a bit of indigenous language, the context makes it easy to read and only helps to add local flavor to the book.
Apr 02, Jillian rated it really liked it. Thanks to Netgalley for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this book.
There was some of the writing with the lack of punctuation for dialogue that was weird at first. Once I got over that I read the book fairly quickly.
This is a story of three people who become a family of their own. There is Betty, recently widowed from an abisive husband, and her son , Solo.
Then there is Mr Chetan who is never called by a first name who moves in with them. The story follows th Thanks to Netgalley for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story follows their lives for a number of years. I found it hard to really emotionally connect with the characters due to the writing style and odd things like calling the male character Mr Chetan.
Found this a really powerful novel and not at all what I expected. There's surprise after surprise and I didn't see any of it coming.
It's also, ultimately, quite tragic but not in a predictable way and you might just need a tissue.
The characters are brilliantly drawn and I found myself caring deeply about the 3 main protagonists and what happens to them.
Love the writing style too. Gave an added dimension. A fantastic read, highly recommended. It's due out on 2nd April so order an advan Found this a really powerful novel and not at all what I expected.

Jan 29, Lolly K Dandeneau added it. The man in the walls, on the stairs, in the rooms. Before he passed he must have put the bad eye on me for truth.
Love here is far stronger between friends and family than in lovers, forced into terrible situations and entanglements for passion.
Written in Trinidadian dialect it may take some readers time to get into the flow, but I feel it lends a more authentic flavor to the tale. To think people told her she was lucky, looking at Betty with Sunil by her side, but what sort of lucky leaves you with broken bones and a cowering child?
Sunil may be dead in a few pages, but his poison has spread and his death will have damaging consequences through the years, testing the bounds of love between mother and son.
After giving Mr. Chetan her co-worker a ride one morning, Betty mentions she needs a lodger, if he knows of anyone needing a place, particularly a mature woman, it would help her greatly.
This in turn becomes the perfect opportunity for Mr. Chetan, as fate would have it, his landlord is selling everything thanks to the misfortune of crime.
A gentle, quiet, private man he will be no hardship, though Betty herself seems to be talkative and possibly a meddler in time the two come to mean as much to each other as devoted spouses.
Chetan and Betty have shameful secrets, even criminal to some minds, but in life we are pushed to make choices to save ourselves, and others. Despite Mr.
In the process, he pushes Mr. The dynamics change once Solo is gone, Chetan is living his life more freely, maybe more for himself finally when someone from the past is again in his life.
He is keen on his pain, and finds many outlets for it. The truth, the same as people, has many faces and may well turn us against the very people who made dangerous decisions for our sake.
It will cost Solo, his mother Betty and Mr. Chetan time that they will never get back. Solo has a lot to learn and finds he is more like his mother than he thinks; getting a mother who has cared for you all your life out of your system isn't so easy.
Some are so hungry for love they will tolerate any sort of arrangement just to feel alive, to be near their beloved and society itself forces people into dangerous situations just to feel the burn of it.
Here, Mr. Chetan is the glue between Betty and Solo, for that it is a savage and beautiful love story. It broke my heart.
I loved this book. But not if you are with your wife or husband and you get through a major crisis. Because that would not make it. Looking for some great streaming picks?
